News of Hardwick’s decision broke on Monday night, prompting an outpouring of shock and surprise from fans, pundits and peers alike.
Collingwood coach Craig McRae, who worked as an assistant under Hardwick at Richmond during their premiership years, told Fox Footy he was “shocked” by the news, but acknowledged the toll the job took on coaches.
“You get tired. You’ve got to find energy sources,” McRae said.
“You’re constantly trying to find the right balance to find the right energy to give to your playing group.
