House GOP Leader Kevin McCarthy is facing a rebellion within his caucus that could see his bid for the Speaker’s gavel derailed after Republicans only clinched a narrow majority in November’s midterm elections.
McCarthy and his allies are warning that failing to coalesce around him could leave the door open for Democrats to pick their choice for House Speaker – a role that’s second in the line of White House succession.
‘If we play games on the floor, the Democrats can end up picking who the Speaker is,’ he said on Newsmax Monday night.
But it’s not Democrats who are posing headaches for the California lawmaker right now – it’s members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, who are complaining that McCarthy has not run far enough to the right to meet their sweeping demands.
