Despite being the favourites to win against their American rivals they were unable to succeed.

Disappointed fans have been quick to point the finger about who blame for tonight’s result, claiming it is a result of the phenomenon dubbed the ‘curse of ITV’.

People have noticed that England does not get as many wins when their games are broadcasted on ITV compared with the BBC.

One user begged: ‘The curse of ITV continues. Could you please let BBC show England matches from now on?’

Another claimed: ‘ITV curse strikes again. In major tournaments since 1998. BBC: W11 D1 L3. ITV: W2 D6 L5.’
