When Bega Cheese bought Vegemite in 2017, returning the iconic spread to Australian ownership, true blue Aussies celebrated.

But in truth, it was an exception to the trend of legendary Australian brands with long local histories being sold off to new foreign owners.

Only two weeks ago, Patties Foods, the company that makes FourN’Twenty, Nanna’s and the 114-year-old line Herbert Adams pies, was sold to Chinese private equity firm Pacific Alliance Group.

Does it really matter, especially if it means saving jobs? For many Aussies, yes, it does.
