NSW commuters will not get a free ride on trains next week after the transport union backed down from its plan to shut down Opal card reader machines.

The Rail, Tram and Bus Union planned to turn off the machines from Wednesday as part of industrial action over demands for better pay and conditions.

The union already left the turnstile gates open…
