Mark McGowan has stirred confusion after landmarks were illuminated to honour the Queen in the same colour used to celebrate Fremantle making it to the AFL finals. 

The premier announced on Thursday the city would be lit up purple until Saturday to commemorate Fremantle – West Australia’s only AFL team playing in this year’s finals series – playing Collingwood at the MCG on the weekend. 

Queen Elizabeth II then passed away at Balmoral in Scotland prompting Mr McGowan to announce buildings would be illuminated in the same colour on Friday.
