I’ve written a lot lately about America in the 1960s and the way that the backlash to civil rights paved the way for the modern Republican Party’s hard-line positions on gun control and abortion bans. But I haven’t spent as much time looking at what happened within the Democratic Party that enabled that seismic shift to happen.
