Ferdinand believes Guardiola – who won the Champions League twice during his time at Barcelona – was brought to the Premier League giants to recreate such European success. 

However, he has failed get his hands on the Champions League silverware despite delivering 10 other trophies and influencing the way Manchester City are viewed within the Premier League since his arrival.

Speaking about Guardiola’s role at Manchester City and the club’s desire for Champions League glory, Ferdinand said: ‘This is the trophy that has eluded him for a number of years now.

‘He wants this trophy. This is what he has been brought in to get. We all know how great of a manager he is but this is a difficult competition to master.’

However, speaking about the requirement to win trophies ahead of Wednesday’s clash at the Etihad, Guardiola said: ‘You can be a top manager and not win titles. 

‘The managers that have the chance to win the titles are at top, top clubs with good investments and exceptional players. Otherwise, for managers, it is impossible to win. 

‘That doesn’t mean the managers in the Championship or not in the top six of the Premier League cannot be excellent managers in tactics, communication, leading. It’s not necessary to win titles.’
