This is the moment a shocked zoo monkey fell off a window ledge at the sight of a woman staring at it through the glass.

The video shows Ms Liu, from the city of Changchun in the north-eastern Chinese province of Jilin, visiting her local zoo.

According to Ms Liu, she had only seen monkeys on TV and was excited to see one in the flesh.

In the viral video, the monkey can be seen initially with its back to her as it perches on a window ledge.

Ms Liu moves her face closer and taps the glass in the hope that it will notice her.

When it suddenly spots her, the monkey is so surprised it falls off the ledge in shock.

The footage ends with the woman bursting out laughing and putting her hands over her face.

Ms Liu posted the footage on the social network Douyin, which is what TikTok is called in China, where it has been widely shared by netizens.

She accompanied the clip with the title: ‘I still can’t figure out why this monkey saw me this way, is it because I wasn’t wearing makeup?!’

Footage of the shocked monkey followed hot-on-the-heels of a viral video – also on Douyin – of a gorilla spitting at zoogoers in the eastern Chinese province of Zhejiang on 16th October.
