Moment 40 cars are destroyed after a mystery fire rips through an auto yard in Indianapolis

  • Firefighters were called to Insurance Auto Auctions on S. Harding Street around 1.45am Wednesday after an inferno broke out and destroyed nearly 40 vehicles
  • Crews utilized tanker operations to attack the blaze and were able to get it under control in less than an hour

Video captured early Wednesday morning shows how firefighters extinguished a blaze that damaged approximately 40 cars at an Indianapolis auto yard.

Crews, utilizing tanker operations, aggressively attacked the fire that had broken out at Insurance Auto Auctions and had it under control in less than 40 minutes.

Indianapolis fire says that although many vehicles were destroyed, no one was injured during the blaze.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

According to the Indianapolis Fire Department, crews were dispatched to Insurance Auto Auctions, located at 3202 S. Harding Street, around 1.45am EST.

When firefighters arrived on scene they found more than three dozen vehicles engulfed in flames.

Using tankers and multiple hoses, crews were able to bring water deep into the auto yard and get the inferno under control by 3.26am. 

At this time it is unclear how the blaze started but officials are looking into the possibility of a lightning strike as heavy storms recently passed through the area.

Indianapolis Fire Department will continue to investigate this incident.
