The quartet then tried to escape on foot but the 16-year-old slipped, and he was slashed and stabbed in both legs with a machete and knife.

Friends last night described Rhamero as a keen sportsman who was ‘bright and beautiful’ and ‘always smiling’.

A pedestrian was injured as a car fled the area, but their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The victim, known as ‘Mero’, was taken to hospital, but died a short time later.

It is the third fatal stabbing involving a teenage boy in Greater Manchester in the past five months.

Tanya Cheetham, whose children went to primary school with Rhamero, said: ‘He was a great kid. Really funny and always had us in stitches. My kids adored him, as did I.’

By last night no arrests had been made as police sought to trace Rhamero’s three friends.
