Lauren Hemp claims Team GB’s women’s football team will improve after beating Chile in their first game… as Olympic gold medal hopefuls prepare to face tricky test of hosts Japan this weekend
Lauren Hemp is looking forward to seeing more improvement from Team GB’s women’s football team after they launched their campaign with a 2-0 win over Chile.
The Manchester City forward and her team-mates head back to the Sapporo Dome to take on hosts Japan on Saturday in what will surely be a tougher match.
Hemp, 20, played a starring role in the opening victory, assisting the first of clubmate Ellen White’s two goals, and she believes Hege Riise’s side can get stronger as the tournament progresses.

Team GB beat Chile 2-0 on Wednesday to get their Olympic Games bid off to the perfect start
‘Week on week, we keep getting better,’ she said. ‘We’ve been together now for over a month and we only keep improving, so it’s a nice start to the tournament with a win under our belt.
‘We’re feeling confident. As everyone can see, there’s a lot of ability and some fantastic players here. Everyone brings something different. We’re just looking forward to hopefully seeing that flourish and improving as the games go on.’
While Team GB were dealing with Chile, favourites USA were thrashed 3-0 by Sweden in a huge shock, which has blown the tournament wide open.
Hemp claims GB have not even discussed Team USA’s shock 3-0 loss to Sweden this week
But Hemp says GB are focusing on themselves. ‘We haven’t really spoken about it much,’ she said.
‘Obviously, we’ve seen the result and we’ve played the USA in the past, so we know what they’re going to be like. If we ended up facing them, then bring it on.
‘We’re just looking forward to every game, and whoever that may be, we’ll be ready.’
