Footballing friends set for a Wembley showdown: They have been Chelsea teammates since their teens… but only one can reach the Euros final as England prepare to face Denmark in crunch tie

  • Friendship between England midfielder Mason Mount and Denmark defender Andreas Christensen will be put on ice during Wembley match
  • The pair have been teammates since their teens and won a trophy together
  • Their girlfriends – both glamourous models – will be cheering for different teams

They have been teammates since their teens – and won a European trophy together for Chelsea just five weeks ago.

But the friendship between England midfielder Mason Mount, 22, and Denmark defender Andreas Christensen, 25, will be put on ice when they line up against each other at Wembley tomorrow.

And their girlfriends – both glamorous models – will for once be cheering for different teams.

Christensen’s girlfriend Katrine Friis, 24, is expected to be at the stadium to support her man during the Euro 2020 semi-final.

Described as the ultimate cheerleader, Miss Friis lives with Christensen in west London and is often seen walking Marley, their Australian Shepherd dog.

A recent picture on the Danish model’s Instagram page shows her holding the Champions League trophy – the most prestigious competition for European clubs – after Chelsea beat Manchester City in the final in May.

Unlike some of the other Wags, Mount’s girlfriend Chloe Wealleans-Watts maintains a lower profile and is rarely photographed at games. The 22-year-old, who is believed to have been with Mount since 2017, is a member of a girl band called 303 and is also on the books of London modelling agency Storm Models.

Mount was just five when a Chelsea scout spotted him and invited him to a training session.

He joined the youth set up when he was six and has been there ever since. When he was 14 his father Tony, a former non-league player and manager, told him to leave Chelsea because academy players rarely made it into the first team. Mount went against his father’s advice and went on to become a regular in the Chelsea and England teams.

Other club teammates who are lining up against each other tomorrow night are Danish midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and England striker Harry Kane.

Hojbjerg, 25, joined Kane, 27, at Tottenham Hotspur last year and they played together almost every week during the last Premier League season. Kane’s wife Katie – along with the rest of England’s Wags – was unable to travel to Rome for the victory over Ukraine because of the current travel restrictions.

Instead, she watched the match with their three children and other family members in a giant tepee in their garden. Tomorrow’s game will take place in front of 60,000 fans at Wembley, but due to Covid travel restrictions, only around 5,000 Danes living in the UK will be able to attend.

÷ The prospect of England winning the Euros is giving bosses at the Football Association a collective headache. In normal times, victorious England players would have been lauded by millions of fans on a victory parade through London a day or so after the final.

However, the FA has made it clear that the current Covid rules mean this cannot happen. A party could be held at Wembley Stadium. But only 90,000 would be able to attend and it couldn’t take place until September.
