A female Good Samaritan has died and a young father was missing Monday after rescuing the man’s two children who were struggling against the current in a Texas river.
The body of 22-year-old Casandra Kendrick was found on Sunday night in the Guadalupe River near her hometown of Seguin, about 35 miles northeast of San Antonio, according to the Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office.
Kendrick had helped the man pull his two children from the river and then was trying to save him, but the water kept pushing them downriver, the sheriff’s office said.
A relative posted these photos of Casandra Kendrick, 22, who died saving two young children and their father from the Guadalupe River in Texas on Sunday
Kendrick was spending the day on the island in the middle of the river with a large group of family members when disaster struck
A man who was with his children on the island noticed that two of his sons began to struggle in the strong current near a bridge
Emergency responders stopped their search for the man at around 10pm on Sunday but resumed looking for him on Monday morning. They did not identify the man who was missing.
The 30-year-old father was spending the day Sunday with his three children on the island in the middle of the river popular for swimming and tubing, where Kendrick was also hanging out with some 20 family members.
At around 5pm, two of the man’s sons got caught in the swift current, and the dad jumped into the water to rescue them, reported Seguin Gazette.
Kendrick, who was with the separate group, went after the man and his children to help them.
The father was able to grab hold of one of his sons and pass him to Kendrick, who then handed the boy off to another person, according to KENS5.
The man jumped into the water and managed to hand his children over the Kendrick, who then passed them to another person
The father and Kendrick then vanished beneath the surface, never to reappear. The search for the male victim is still ongoing
The father performed the same maneuver with his other child, but then began to struggle in the current.
Both the men and woman eventually disappeared beneath the surface near the FM 1117 bridge, prompting relatives on the island to summon help.
Divers recovered Kendrick’s body just before 8.45pm on Sunday.
Family and friends took to Facebook on Monday to mourn Kendrick’s death.
‘She died saving lives,’ one relative wrote. ‘What a beautiful soul. Now she will be watching over y’all. So sorry for y’all loss. Prayers to all.’
